Volume, pan, muting soloing and routing can be tweaked per channel, and we can also work with the internal master processing. It's worth mentioning that I've found some polarity and routing inconsistencies between libraries from time to time when I've been digging deep into Frankensteining kits together, but if it's just swapping out a snare here, a cymbal there etc, that seems to work fine. Overall it'll likely be a little more expensive to curate a selection of libraries that interest you (Toontrack call these EZX packs), but the Sibiac overlay (which also works with LBL) makes mixing and matching between those EZX packs super simple. If unlocking more flexibility is the goal, I'd probably nudge you toward EZDrummer instead.
It's a no-brainer to grab that and see how it works out before splashing any cash. That said, Slate's free offering is still hands down the best free acoustic kit I've heard. That probably won't be a dealbreaker if you like the stock presets, but speaking as someone who's kinda particular about drums and has grown kinda tired of the stock presets over time, it's becoming a bit of a drag here.
I'd say the most significant limitation to be aware of is that right now, we can't configure individual kit pieces. The Steven Slate Drums grooves are open midi format, so although we don't have access to them via the plug-in GUI in Reaper's FX window yet, you can set up a database to browse, audition and insert them using Media Explorer instead.Īll of the access to SSD that we currently have is built on free community resources, LBL, templates and RPL files.
